Prompt April 2 2020

A Jelly-Fish
Marianne Moore

Visible, invisible,
A fluctuating charm,
An amber-colored amethyst
Inhabits it; your arm
Approaches, and
It opens and
It closes;
You have meant
To catch it,
And it shrivels;
You abandon
Your intent—
It opens, and it
Closes and you
Reach for it—
The blue
Surrounding it
Grows cloudy, and
It floats away
From you.

Moore revised this poem and this version is compact and images are more precise. The alternating lines in trimeter and tetrameter mimic the movement of the jellyfish.

Visible, invisible,
…a fluctuating charm
an amber-tinctured amethyst
…inhabits it, your arm
approaches and it opens
…and it closes; you had meant
to catch it and it quivers;
…you abandon your intent.

  1. Conifer

    Eaten
    Spread
    Blown seeds
    Sprung, a gift
    In every size, treasure
    Mine, treasure pine, a treasure
    fine, petals so hard
    Petals that guard, no scoops
    No drips, not a cone you can lick
    A fragrant treasure
    The biggest jar I have, filled
    Ponderosa, eastern white
    Lollylob, scotch, bristlecone,
    Pitch, sugar, pinyon
    Coulter
    cone.

    (on my computer, I used a center margin, and this is in the shape of a pine cone.)
    Linda Trott Dickman
